Travel by boat down Magnolia River in Magnolia Springs, Alabama, and you will pass million-dollar mansions and small fishing cottages. My grandparents lived in an old house along the river, and their mail was delivered on the dock of their boathouse. Their house is gone now, along with the boathouse. On a recent trip, we noticed old boathouses falling into disrepair along the banks. They tugged at my heart, reminding me of lazy summer days spent fishing and canoeing on that river. I used to dream that I would live along that river, a thought that still makes my heart beat a little faster. That dream is not to be due to the sale of the land and the razing of our family homestead. The boathouse falling into the river, overgrown with vines, reminds me of the dreams, once vivid – now abandoned.
