The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is the state insect of Virginia. It is one of our largest butterflies. They live mostly in deciduous woodlands. Female swallowtails lay their eggs on the leaves of woody plants like wild black cherry and tulip trees. They feed on nectar from wildflowers and flowers in neighborhood gardens from spring through fall. The butterfly in this piece is landing on a coneflower.
