After my mother died, I signed up for a block of the month class using Marti Michell’s templates. I was not quite myself yet when I shopped for fabric, and I selected fabrics that were not the colors that make me happy. I chose lots of pale pinks and pale greens. I enjoyed the class and loved everyone’s blocks when we did show and tell, but I never liked my own. Finally, the teacher realized my heart wasn’t in making the sampler quilt that we were building, and she gave me permission not to finish the class or the quilt. Fast forward to the Houston International Quilt Show in 2012. I was invited by a friend to attend for my first time. I signed up for Marti Michell’s Double Wedding Ring class. I took the fabrics that I had purchased for the sampler class plus some deeper greens and more intense pinks. As I took the class, Marti came around to chat, and I had her sign the backing. Back home, I asked my original teacher if I could attend the reveal class for the sampler. I brought my Double Wedding Ring quilt signed on the back by Marti Michell herself, a real surprise for my classmates.
